Wooden acft propellers... |
Lead | |
|
Watching a re-re-re-run on the History Channel; footage of the British Handley- Paige bomber with large four-bladed wooden propellers - knowing the critical
nature of balance/symmetry, I wonder... how did they make them? Most certainly could not have been from a single piece of wood. This bomber was being built
ca. 1916 - 18. Also noted an artillery officer using what appeared to be a very long and large slide-rule. The Air Force magazine issue for June '09 has
a nice article about and photos of the Tu-4; the reverse-built Soviet B-29.

All I have seen were laminated, and had wood pins IIRC.

Thanks Don. Laminated. Went looking on the web and learned how to build and balance a laminated wooden propeller and saw how two propellers can be mated to
form a four-bladed prop. Neat stuff I never knew. Will come in handy when I build my own copy of the Handley Page bomber. Watch for one in your neighborhood
sky raining cats on your roof. Lazy Sunday afternoon.

Don't know that I can drop one/more katzen directly into that pot for you, Don. Norden bombsight didn't work all that well for the "pickle
barrel" accuracy with aerodynamic bombs and I'll be aiming with a cat's arsehole in the viewer. Wind drift, aerodynamics of leg-splaying,
wind-drag of fur...

Five litter boxes here; four cats. "Carpet bombing" is a major misdemeanor here.
