I own a No.4 Mark 2 still in the original "mummy" wrap. It was made in 1955 so is now 53 years old. I have acquired two that have not been shot but have been unwrapped. Do I keep it as a show and tell piece in my collection or Do I sell it for the maximum I can get? I'm conflicted What do you guys think? This will get you into the spirit of giving for Christmas! I don't think I could stand to leave it wrapped! I would clean her up and enjoy it at the range. Garand issued April, 1956, new in wrapper to Bob G. Yockey, at Camp Pendleton, California. serial #2774590. Have you seen it?

Posts: 1 (11/28/08 19:11:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I unwrapped my June '55 mummy (A15462) three years ago--on its 50th birthday. The wrapping had been compromised by the need to put the import scribblings on the rifle, and there was some verdigris forming around the buttplate. That much I could see. What I couldn't see was what else might also have been going on under the rest of the wrapper, so I gently removed the wrapping, labels, string and tags, putting all of that into a zip-lock plastic bag, to keep for future reference. Some of the cosmoline on the rifle had actually dried and caked, maybe losing some of its preservative qualities as it did. The unissued-to-troops (and unfired, except for the proof rounds) rifle now resides safely in the vault, verdigris-free and thoroughly checked for any other potential deterioration--of which there is absolutely none. I felt like Howard Carter finding the Tut cache . . . . .

From what I saw peeping through the openings in the wrappings, the grand opening was justified, if only to confirm that there was no hidden deterioration going on. The best compromise was to keep the wraps, etc., carefully packed and available with the rifle.

I have 2 yugo 5966 sks's still in the wrappers up in the attic, and they are going to stay there. I bought 4 origionally, I cleaned one to shoot and traded another to Don the same weekend that we met in Kokomo IN. and I scored a like new M95 carbine.
